Summary

Two test pits were dug at this location in 2017 as part of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust's 'Imagined Land' project, one of which encountered a ditch of probable medieval date. Finds recovered included a small assemblage of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints; undatable burnt flints; Late Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval, post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds; post-medieval to modern brick and roof tile fragments; pieces of post-medieval clay tobacco and a post-medieval/modern thimble. A non-systematic metal-detecting survey of this land undertaken at the same time recovered a medieval mount, a 16th-century button and a range of late post-medieval to modern objects.

April-May 2017. Test Pitting and Metal-detecting.
Excavation of two test pits as part of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust's 'Imagined Land' project - a community archaeology project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Test Pit 10 at [1] encountered a natural stoney sand at a depth of 0.55m, which was overlain by an undisturbed subsoil layer. Finds recovered included:
6 Late Neolithic/Bronze Age flint flakes, a chip and utilised shatter piece.
3 Late Saxon pottery sherds.
2 post-medieval roof tile fragments, 2 brick fragments and 2 pieces of clay tobacco pipe.
1 post-medieval/modern pottery sherd, 4 roof tile fragments and 2 brick fragments.
Modern brick and glass fragments were also collected during the excavation of this test pit.

Test Pit 11 at [2] revealed what was eventually determined to be an east-to-west aligned ditch. This feature produced Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds, a small assemblage of residual prehistoric worked flints and a number of burnt flints. Finds recovered from the overlying soil deposits included:
7 Neolithic/Bronze Age flint flakes, a chip and ?hammerstone.
2 medieval pottery sherds.
2 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd and a brick fragment.
1 post-medieval/modern pottery sherd and a thimble.

A non-systematic metal-detecting survey was also undertaken by children and adult volunteers during the test pitting. Finds recovered included from the two fields included:
Medieval rosette-shaped domed mount.
2 post-medieval coins, 2 buttons, a thin loop, pewter mount fragment and possible brass vessel fragment.
3 post-medieval/modern buttons, a buckle, mount and thimble.
