Full Description
Appletona, farmhouse and attached cottage.
A farmhouse and cottage constructed in the mid 16th century. The farmhouse is constructed of brick walling with pine timbers providing structural support, whilst the cottage is constructed of flint walls. The whole is covered in Norfolk reed thatch. The house and cottage are joined to form an L-shaped plan. An earlier three-cell plan remains in the parlour and part of the hall.
The building is mainly two-storeyed. The principal elevation faces south and is five bays wide. Four of the bays are walled in diaper pattern brickwork, whilst the eastern bay has been rebuilt in the 20th century.
The cottage is connected to the eastern bay of the farmhouse via a two-storey link. The cottage has a single chimney and irregularly spaced windows.
Structural pine beams are still extant inside the house, along with a fireplace with a blocked bread oven in the parlour.
The house went through a period of reconstruction in the early 18th century, evidenced by brickwork on the western gable. The barn and most of the eastern bay of the house was destroyed by fire in 1969; the eastern bay of the house was then rebuilt and connected to the cottage. The house was renamed Appletona from The Thatched Cottage in 2018 (S2).
