Summary

A watching brief maintained during limited groundworks at this site in 2015 recorded three ditches. Although one produced Roman and Early/Middle Saxon pottery sherds these were abraded and potentially residual, particularly as a parallel feature corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps.

Map

February-March 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of solar farm.
The cable trenches excavated revealed three ditches - two aligned north-to-south and one east-to-west. One of the former produced a single Roman pottery sherd and two handmade sherds of Early/Middle Saxon date. These were all small and abraded and most likely residual, particularly as the adjacent, parallel ditch corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on the Kenninghall tithe map (S1). A perpendicular ditch to the east potentially represented an earlier element of the same field system.
See report (S2) for further details.
