Full Description
December 2024. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new barn.
The stripping of the footprint of the new building revealed no archaeologically-significant remains, although it should be noted that the topsoil was not fully removed. A small test hole demonstrated that a natural chalk and sand deposit was overlain by a reasonably thick subsoil layer and an additional 0.1m of topsoil. A connecting service trench was sufficiently deep to encounter the natural geology but no archaeological features were observed.
Unstratified finds recovered during this work, including a small assemblage of 17 prehistoric worked flints, comprising pieces of potentially Mesolithic or earlier, Mesolithic/Early Neolithic, Neolithic, Late Neolithic/Bronze Age and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. A Roman coin and a possible Roman finger ring were also found [1].
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
