Summary

Post-medieval garden walls to south and east of 30 Nelson Street (NHER 34208). The southern section dates to 1818, although part had to be rebuilt after it collapse in 1987. The eastern section incorporates a piece of 16th-century brick walling with a blocked stone doorway and a square-headed window that represent surviving elements of a demolished building.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Garden Walls. Curving section to Nelson Street dated 1818. Brick with coping tiles. Mostly in a variation of English garden wall bond. Wall returns to north at east end, but is here rebuilt 1987-88 following collapse in October 1987 gale. This length returns west to house at its north end and incorporates a piece of 16th-century brick walling. This has a pointed arched stone doorway, blocked, and a square-headed window with a timber lintel. Abutting house are stone quoins, all this belonging to an otherwise demolished building occupying the site. The main garden wall is visually important in the street scene."

According to (S2) the south wall was erected following the demolition of the Three Cranes public house (NHER 64103) in 1816. On the inside it carries a date stone inscribed 'W.O. 1818', referring to the then owner, William Oxley, who was paid £150 for the improvement works.
