Summary

The oldest parts of the church are Late Norman, dating to the 12th century. In the 13th century the church was extended in Early English style and the windows were all replaced in the 15th century in Perpendicular style. The tower fell in 1778 and was replaced by a bellcote which was demolished in 1977. The church was completely restored in 1883 by the architect Phipson, explaining the new look of the building.

St Peter's Church.
Norman, 13th and 15th centuries. Tower fell 1778.
For full details see (S1) in file.
E. Rose (NAU), 7 October 1980.

January 1988. Visit.
West gallery inserted into church. Two holes dug into nave for supports. Fill of loose earth contained post medieval pammets, brick fragmetns etc. This may be due to removed vaults and indeed tomb slabs in nave floor seem to have no graves beneath.
E. Rose (NAU), 3 February 1988.

June-July 2025. Building Survey.
Condition survey undertaken to establish a baseline record prior to construction activities associated with the A47 Tuddenham to Easton dualling works.
The overall condition of the building was deemed to be reasonable, although some structural defects were noted – the most significant being evidence for past movement and repair in the south porch and nave roof. Various other more minor/cosmetic defects were also noted. Damage to chest tombs and gravestones in the churchyard was also recorded.
See reports (S2) and (S3) for further details (including photographic evidence for all defects noted).
P. Watkins (HES), 28 September 2025.
