Summary

A watching brief maintained during the construction of a carpark at this site in 2019 recorded nothing of archaeological interest. It should though be noted that the monitored groundworks were relatively shallow and did not fully remove the subsoil layer (which potentially obscured any archaeological remains present). Finds were limited to late post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, post-medieval brick and tile fragments and undatable iron nails.

Map

June 2019. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new car park.
The stripping of the western two thirds of the site revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. This strip was though relatively shallow and didn’t fully remove the subsoil layer (which would have likely obscured any archaeological remains present). Two exploratory linear trenches were then dug in the eastern third of the site. These were reduced to the same depth as the strip to the west and revealed nothing of archaeological interest.
The small number of unstratified finds recovered included pottery sherds of late 19th- to mid-20th-century date, post-medieval brick and tile fragments and undatable iron nails.
See report (S1) for further details.
