Summary

Several undated pits, including two large probable quarries were identified at this location during the installation of a new sewer pipeline in 2013. It should be noted that these remains were recorded in far from ideal conditions during the excavation of the pipe trench itself. Overburden was also not fully removed during the initial strip of the working easement, with the surviving subsoil layer potentially masking any additional remains present.

Map

October-December 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new sewer pipeline (Field D).
The working easement was stripped of topsoil to a depth of 0.30-0.38m, with three machine-dug test holes demonstrated that the surviving subsoil was at least 0.20m deep. None revealed archaeologically-significant remains and nothing of interest was noted during the initial topsoil strip. Several undated pits were though noted during the subsequent excavation of the pipe trench itself, including two large probable quarries. No finds were recovered during either phase of work.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.225).
