Summary

A series of watching briefs maintained during the installation of a new driveway in 2014 and the construction of three new bungalows between 2017 and 2018 recorded no archaeological-significant features or deposits. There was therefore no evidence for surviving remains associated with the possible moat recorded close to this location (NHER 25835), despite its southern arm potentially coinciding with the northernmost plot.

Map

December 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new driveway.
The route of this new driveway was subject to only a relatively shallow strip, which did not fully remove the topsoil layer. As a result nothing of archaeological interest was observed. A small number of unstratified medieval and post-medieval finds were recovered.
See report (S1) and NHER 25835 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2025.

April 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new bungalow (Plot 1).
The foundation trenches excavated reached natural geological deposits but no archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed.
Services trenches excavated within this and three other development plots (Plots 2-4) also revealed nothing of archaeological interest.
No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2025.

August 2017 and March 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of second new bungalow (Plot 2).
The foundation trenches excavated reached natural geological deposits but no archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed.
No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2025.

August 2017 and March 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of third new bungalow (Plot 3).
Although this plot appears to coincide with the southern arm of a possible moat (NHER 25835) visible on the the Outwell tithe map (S2), no archaeologically-significant features or deposits were observed with the excavated foundation trenches.
No finds were recovered.
Information from draft report.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2025.
