Full Description
September 2023. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential impact of proposed West Winch Housing Access Road.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 31 July 2025.
April-May 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on route of proposed West Winch Housing Access Road (Trenches 1-11).
The 11 trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of scattered linear and discrete features, the majority of which produced little or no dating evidence.
The more notable remains included a large pit-like feature that produced a single presumably residual Roman pottery sherd and several peg tile fragments of medieval to post-medieval date. A sample taken from the dark primary fill of this feature produced waterlogged material, including rush. Two smaller, undated pits were also recorded, a sample from one of which contained a single charred hulled wheat grain and a small amount of charcoal.
The ditches uncovered included two adjacent north-west to south-east aligned features that potentially related to one of several linear cropmarks mapped at this location (part of a group of scattered features of uncertain date recorded as NHER 38303). Finds were limited to a small number of Mesolithic and later worked flints, which were most likely residual. A north-to-south aligned ditch corresponds with a former field boundary shown on the North Runcton tithe map (S2) and later maps.
Unstratified finds were limited to fragments of animal bone.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 31 July 2025.
