Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 1998 and 2017 recovered several groups of medieval Short Cross coinage likely to represent one or more dispersed coin hoards or purse losses. These coins were all probably lost or deposited around the mid 13th century.

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

September 1998. Metal-detecting. [1].
Found by six members of AHS:
12 medieval silver Short Cross coins likely to represent a dispersed hoard or purse loss. The nature and condition of these coins suggest they were probably deposited between 1230 and 1250.
These coins were disclaimed as Treasure and returned to the finders. See (S1) and (S2).
Previously recorded under NHER 24415 - see NHER 24415 for details of unrelated single medieval and post-medieval coins found at the same time.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 September 2025.

December 1999 to January 2000. Metal detecting. [2].
Found by [3]-[6]:
7 medieval coins. 6 are silver Short Cross pennies and form a first addendum to the hoard recovered in September 1998. The last coin is a potentially associated fragmentary Irish penny of John (c.1207-1211), which puts the total for the hoard at 20 coins. These coins slightly refine the likely date of deposition, to 1240-1250.
See four lists in file.
These coins were disclaimed as Treasure and returned to the finders. See (S3).
Previously recorded under NHER 24415 - see NHER 24415 for details of what was almost certainly an unrelated medieval coin and a post-medieval button found at the same time.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 16 September 2000. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 September 2025.

February-March 2012. Metal-detecting. [7].
Found very close together:
Medieval coin hoard of 3 Short Cross pennies. These coins show little wear and were mostly likely lost or deposited in the mid 1240s.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2014 T327) and returned to the finder.
Previously recorded under NHER 24415.
A. Beckham (HES), 3 May 2018. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 September 2025.

September 2017. Metal-detecting. [8].
Found in close proxity, in vicinity of coins found in 2012:
5 medieval coins - all Short Cross pennies of Henry II and Henry III. These coins form a first addendum to the hoard recovered in February-March 2012, which puts the total for this hoard at 8 coins. These coins do not alter the likely date of deposition suggested by the previously discovered group (mid 1240s).
Information from PAS import.
The coins have been submitted as possible Treasure (Ref: 2017 T149).
Previously recorded under NHER 22918 - see [9].
E. McDonald (HES), 1 February 2018. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 September 2025.
