Summary

A watching brief maintained during the construction of a new agricultural building at this location in 2020 recorded no archaeologically-significant features or deposits. It should though be noted that the monitored groundworks were of a limited natural – with a shallow initial topsoil strip (which left the underlying subsoil largely intact) being followed by the excavation of 10 relatively small stanchion pits. Unstratified finds were largely limited to objects of late post-medieval date.

Map

July 2020. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new agricultural building.
The stripping of topsoil from the building’s footprint revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits - although it should be noted that the underlying subsoil was left largely intact and potentially obscured any features present. The subsequent excavation of 10 relevately small stanchion pits did though also reveal nothing of archaeological interest.
Unstratified finds were limited to a single late post-medieval pottery sherd, small post-medieval brick and tile fragments, a piece of clay tobacco pipe and a number of undatable iron nails.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.104).
