Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2016 identified a number of parallel linear anomalies that potentially represent the traces of medieval to post-medieval cultivation. Whilst these may not necessarily represent the remnants of true ridge and furrow cultivation they are nevertheless potentially related to narrow strip fields known to have been present at this location.

Map

February 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline (Field 24).
The only responses of note are a series of parallel, relatively evenly-spaced, north-east to south-west aligned linear anomalies. It is suggested that these may indicate the presence of land drains, although it is also noted that they potentially represent the traces of medieval to post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. While this is not necessarily the case, they are certainly potentially associated with former strip fields. The presence of such fields is demonstrated by the Alpington tithe map, which shows a single narrow relict strip of glebe land at this location. It appears the alignment of the strips would have been broadly similar to that of the geophysical anomalies.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
