Summary

In 1951 during the construction of filter tanks for the sewage works a Roman cobbled floor, 15m square, was recovered, closely assocated with pottery and animal bones. To the northeast a possible hearth or oven was also noted, suggesting occupation of this area during the Roman period.

Full Description

August 1951. East of Scole House in construction of filter tanks for sewerage.
Roman cobbled flooring, at least 50' (15m) square found around 2' (0.6m) below modern surface with pottery and animal bones on it.
To northeast was structure of burnt clay (?oven).
Dupondius of Faustina I, Dupondius of Claudis I.
Fragment of puddingstone quern
B. Brown interpreted part of the cobbling as a road 18 yds (16.5m) wide but I could not see this on site
