Full Description
1971. Hole dug, probably by landowner.
Material from hole 9ft square within moat. One lot from top 12" and other from 12" to 30" deep. Had not reached natural but hole filled in again. This is area A on sketch on card (S1). Area B produced some material from surface area only, but was not excavated.
Seen A. C. T. H. Mck.Clough and W.F.Milligan (NCM).
W. Milligan (NCM).
A. Rogerson notes the 1979 medieval 'material' is a colossal amount of 12th-13th century pottery now in NCM.
E. Rose, 15 January 1991.
Remaining earthwork feature is a ditch C. 140 metres long running N-S and widening into a pond like feature at the Northern end. Mostly water filled 1 1/2 - 2 metres wide (max) fringed by willow in many areas, especially to North. Slight rise in arable to West, could be an indication of the moat edge here. A few brick fragments with field much churned to South.
H. Paterson. (A&E) 8 Feb 2000.
Mid June 2000. Metal detecting.
Found on surface of moated island while on a visit with the landowner much pottery of which a sample was retained:
1 bowl rim, 1 jar/bowl rim, 2 basal and 3 body sherds Medieval unglazed.
1 jug rim, 1 bowl rim and 2 body sherds late medieval or transitional.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NLA).
NB: this material is later in date than that found during excavation.
Comp. A. Rogerson, 20 June 2000.
