Summary

The placename ‘Hills and Holes’, given to this area of open woodland and scrub, is sometimes associated with sites where iron working has taken place (see NHER 8041 2.73km to the west). A site visit, and earthworks visible on aerial photographs, indicate that the area has certainly been quarried; for what is not clear, although marl has been suggested. No evidence of iron working has been found.

Map

May 1983. Visit.
Name from Ordnance Survey mapping.
Name often indicates an ancient ironworking site, but here might refer to marl pits.
In fact there is only one hill and one hole! Large depression on northeast flank of hill on which wood stands. All very overgrown. Obviously a quarry, but for what is unclear.
E. Rose (NAU), 25 May 1983.

February 2008. Norfolk NMP.
At least three depressions are visible as earthworks at the site described above, on aerial photographs taken in 1947 (S1), centred around TG 2903 1673. They almost certainly represent quarrying, and as such have not been mapped by the NMP, although their outlines have been added to the relevant ALSF extraction layer. This, together with the outline depicted on Wroxham Tithe Map (S2) – of an irregular wooded area, presumably a former quarry – has led to the alteration of the overall monument polygon for the site. What was being extracted at the site remains unclear; BGS geological mapping indicates that it is predominantly sited on Crag bedrock deposits, with superficial head gravel deposits along its northern edge, so sand and/or gravel is a possibility.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 11 February 2008.
