Summary

A Palaeolithic flint handaxe was found during the excavation of a trench here in 1964. This site is close to where three Palaeolithic worked flints were found in 1956 (NHER 8081).

Found on May and Baker site, Sweet Briar Road, in spoil from a trench dug into gravel (?terrace gravel):
1 Palaeolithic iron-stained flint Acheulian handaxe. Found at a depth of between 3ft [90cm] and 7ft [2m], relatively close to where 'Clactonian' flakes were found in 1956 (NHER 8081). See drawing (S1). Information from (S2).

This find was first reported in (S3) and was discussed and figured in a short article that appeared in a May and Baker magazine (S4). See file for draft text from (S4) and originals of the photographs from this article (S5). This find was subsequently listed in (S6). It is also noted in (S7), (S8), (S9) and (S10) although no additional information is given.
