Summary

Two post medieval roads (which could have earlier origins) are depicted on Faden’s Map of Norfolk of 1797. On later maps they seem to be partially ‘fossilised’ in field boundaries; one is marked by a former footpath. Part of the latter is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs; other cropmarks visible in the surrounding area may represent a contemporary system of land division.

Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks visible on aerial photographs (S2)-(S3) may relate to the two roads described above. As the latter are depicted on Faden’s Map of Norfolk (S1), they presumably date to the post medieval period, although their origins might be earlier. Part of one of the roads is probably fossilised in the modern field boundary between TG 3203 2889 and TG 3180 2874; part of the other (the one oriented northwest to southeast) was still used as a footpath in the early 20th century (S4). Part of the latter is visible as cropmarks on the aerial photographs, between TG 3189 2861 and TG 3218 2837, on which it has a rather ‘braided’ appearance. Other cropmarks in the surrounding area may represent part of a contemporary field system, perhaps including further trackways.

It should be noted that the archaeological significance of some of the features is doubtful, such as the possible trackway visible in the northern part of the site, between TG 3179 2897 and TG 3195 2888. Conversely, further archaeological cropmarks may remain unmapped.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 22 March 2007.
