Summary

Part of a wooden dug-out canoe was dredged from the River Ant below Wayford Bridge in 1927. At first thought to be medieval, it was later dated to AD 720, and is the oldest boat found in Norfolk to date. The canoe is a nationally important object.

Dredged from River Ant below Wayford Bridge and 1.5m (5ft) down in peat. Part of a dug-out canoe, now 3.6m (12ft) long. Rows of drilled holes suggest post Roman.
