Full Description
Ordnance Survey vertical aerial photograph.
Double linear feature; cropmark.
Seen A.K. Gregory (NAU), 1976.
E. Rose (NAU).
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a trackway or road of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs running from Boundary Farm to Meadow Farm, Hickling (S1). The trackway runs intermittently from TG 3970 2286 to TG 3987 2229. The southern end is more continuous and easily identifiable than the northern end. The trackway is defined by two parallel ditches, 6-8m apart. An inner parchmark is visible at several places along the length of the track and this would indicate a compacted surface or even a surfaced track or road.
The date of this trackway is uncertain. It does follow the same alignment as several areas of fields and enclosures recorded within this area (NHER 49321 and 49330), these have been interpreted as being Roman in date, however it seems unlikely that the trackway is of this date. A medieval to post medieval date may be more likely, although the feature appears to pre-date the field and road layout depicted on the available post medieval maps.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 March 2007.
