Summary

Excavations from 1989 to 1990 in advance of development work recorded part of the city's Late Saxon defensive ditch and evidence of Saxon occupation, a medieval drying kiln and late medieval flint structures, and medieval and post medieval pits. Excavation took place either side of Calvert Street. To the west a pre-Conquest defensive ditch was uncovered together with the site of an earthen rampart east of the ditch (Calvert Street forming an intermural road east of the rampart). The ditch was c.7.5m wide and aligned north-to-south. It was probably excavated at the beginning of the 10th century and may have formed part of an Anglo-Scandinavian defensive alignment on the north bank of the River Wensum. East of Calvert Street, evidence was found of structures concentrated towards the street frontage.

1998. Desk-based Assessment.
Following an earlier archaeological assessment (S7), a further desktop study confirms a likely early gateway in the Late Saxon defences, where Botolph Street enters, for traffic from the north-west. The area on the north-east side of Botolph was open for some centuries; the town ditch seems to have survived as a recognisable landmark, although mostly infilled and converted into a lane, to be recorded in the medieval Enrolled Deeds. A small area on Magdalen Street may have lain at the south end of a former market area, overlooked by St Botolph's church, and now completely lost through infilling and the modern loss of Botolph Street.
See report (S8) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S9).
