Summary

A hole dug here by workmen in 1990 disturbed human remains, although by the time the work was monitored by an archaeologicst no articulated skeletons could be seen. Flint and mortar structural remains were though noted. In 2025 another hole dug nearby encounted further human remains, which had possibly been disarticulated within a charnel pit. These discoveries suggest that the cemetery of St Andrew's Church (NHER 591) had almost certainly originally extended into this area.

Map

15 April 1990. Field Observation.
Examination of 1m by 2.5m hole dug by workmen at TG 23090 08735, which had disturbed human remains.
No articulated skeletons visible. Depth of approximately 1.1m.
Also flint and mortar noted in north and south section, appeared faced, in south-west corner cut by red brickwork.
H. Wallis (NAU) 26 April 1990.

Before 7 January 2025. Casual Observation.
Human remains encountered during excavation of service trench to north-west of St Andrew's Churchyard, at c. TG 23093 08738.
A specialist examination of the bones recovered suggests they comprise the remains of at least three individuals. It is possible that additional individuals were represented by the remains disturbed, as more bones were apparently left in situ on site. It is noted that photographs taken by the Norfolk Constabulary Crime Scene Investigator (S1) of bones in section suggest a charnel pit may have been disturbed, rather than articulated remains within graves. The retrieved bones include several identifiable as being from both at least one sub-adult (c.16-18 years) as well as adult or older sub-adult long bones.
It was subsequently determined that no further excavation was required at the site. All bones were carefully reburied as part of the reinstatement works - see additional photographs (S2).
See report (S3) for further details. This discovery was also reported in the local press - see (S4)-(S6).
P. Watkins (HES), 10 January 2025.
