Map

Moat?
Southeast of building marked on (S1) and later maps as Manor House. Not noted in Pevsner or other sources, and as the building on site NHER 8580 was still known in 1836 as Manor House (and was not demolished until late 19th century) this suggests the building was of late date. Water feature is shown as L-shaped with north and west arms on (S3) map, but outline is more irregular on (S1), and (S4) shows a much more amorphous lake-like plan. House now demolished.

(S5) describes building and grounds; states erected in 1771 by Rev. Taylor; mentions lake only in passing. In 1850 'an old brick drain' 20cm (8 inches) square was found 91cm (3 feet) deep, and 45cm (18 inches) deeper a lead pipe 3.8cm (1 1/2 inches) across, in the grounds 457m (500 yards) to the southeast.

A possible medieval to post medieval moat or pond is visible on aerial photographs (S6). The grid reference of this feature has been corrected from TG 4975 1445 to TG 4978 1445. This feature is L-shaped in plan and measures up to 56m by 31m in extent. The two arms of the feature each measure up to 10m across. It is possible that this is part of a medieval moat or pond. However, the amorphous plan of this feature on the 1842 enclosure map (see above) suggests that it may have been part of an ornamental lake.
J. Albone (NMP), 12 October 2005
