Full Description
Pre 1897. Stray Find.
"Quartzite hammerhead" found at unknown location in Caister on Sea parish before the end of the 19th century. This find is noted by (S1) and (S2). Information from (S3).
According to (S1) this object was part of the Flitch collection in 1897, although it appears that it was not amongst the material subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum. The context of its mention in (S1) suggests that it was probably what would now be described as a pebble macehead. These objects are not closely datable, having been found in both Mesolithic and prehistoric contexts.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 15 April 2015.
