NHER 8732 (Find Spot record) - Unprovenanced Palaeolithic worked flints (Saham Toney, poorly located)

Palaeolithic (or potentially Palaeolithic) worked flints known to have been recovered from Saham Toney during the late 19th century or early 20th century, but with little additional information regarding provenance.

FINDS IN MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

The British Museum Sturge Collection includes a single Palaeolithic flint flake from Saham Toney (2011,8109.743).

This find is noted in (S2) and listed in (S3). Wymer records this object on (S4) and in (S5) as a sharp flake, marked "8' down April 1908". This would suggest this flake was not a surface find, but recovered from a gravel pit or some other deep working. Although the finder is not known the apparent date of discovery suggests that it is not related to the finds noted in (S5) (see below).

REPORTED DISCOVERIES

Pre 1907. Stray Find.
Saham Toney is listed in (S6) as one of the locations that had produced Palaeolithic implements prior to 1907. Two finders are listed; C. F. Newton of Saham Toney and W. G. Clarke himself. According to (S1) Clarke's find/finds are also mentioned in his own records (S7).
Newton's finds were previously recorded under NHER 8730.

Pre 1911. Stray Find.
In 1911 C. F. Newton exhibited four "surface implements with curious patination" at a meeting of the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia (S8). These were descibed as "apparently an early type of Neolith" and therefore may have been Palaeolithic.

Although it is not known where the majority of C. F. Newton's finds were recovered, it is clear from other objects that he reported that at least some came from the land of Meadow Farm. See NHER 8730 for information on Newton's other prehistoric discoveries.
