Full Description
Tumulus, formerly under plough, northwest of St Peter's Church. Approximately 37m (120ft) OD.
Southern of pair, 92cm (3ft) high, much spread, no ditch.
Seen by [1] and R. R. Clarke (NCM) 10 September 1934 and by R. R. Clarke (NCM) 24 December 1936.
Noted by (S1) (copy in file).
25 May 1950.
Under fruit trees - still faintly perceptible.
R. R. Clarke (NCM).
40m diameter, 50cm high grassed but covered with fruit trees.
Hardly looks like a barrow.
A. J. Lawson (NAU) 11 February 1976.
January 1984.
Regular, circular mound which does look like a spread barrow 0.5m high. Grass topped, weather vane post on top.
J. Wymer (NAU)
Field previously under fruit trees, has once again been returned to arable. Trees were removed by uprooting, but owner says no trees had been situated on this tumulus. Profile much spread.
H. Paterson (NLA) 21 February 1996.
It is likely that this this site is a demolished post mill as indicated by the central cross in the middle of the circular cropmark shown on 2005 Google Earth images.
See (S2).
S. Howard (HES), 24 November 2010.
November 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of the post medieval windmill mound were clearly visible on aerial photographs (S3) and have been mapped as the centroid of the site has altered from TL 9828 9302 to TL 9828 9299. The windmill mound itself measures 20m in diameter and the diagnostic central cross is clearly visible.
A second possible mound, previously recorded as NHER 9029, has been mapped as part of NHER 57469.
E. Ford (NMP), 13 November 2012.
