Summary

Stray finds in 1951 and metal-detecting between 1999 and 2019 recovered a Neolithic polished axehead; Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds (including a Roman mortarium fragment); Early Saxon glass and amber beads; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and a range of other, undated Late Iron Age to Early Saxon and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Late Iron Age/Roman brooch and knobbed terret; a Roman buckle, furniture fitting and spoon bit; numerous Early Saxon items including brooches, clothes fittings, harness mounts, tools, knife fragments, shield fittings and a ring; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; a Late Saxon finger ring or ear ring; a medieval buckle, strap end and strike-a-light; a medieval/post-medieval finger ring and a post-medieval knife end-cap. The very large number of Early Saxon finds recovered from within the same area suggests that this was the site of an Early Saxon inhumation cemetery.

October 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Examination of the available aerial photographs in this area revealed what appears to be an area of quarrying centred on TL 9842 9039 on the 1946 photographs (S1). This may have been undertaken in order to build up the revetments on the southern side of the River Thet, as they appear to have been recently improved. Subsequently, the only features visible on the aerial photographs are filled in pits which are the remnants of this possible quarrying (S2-S4). None of these features are considered to be archaeological, but have been noted since they are sited within such a significant area of finds.
