Full Description
April 1976. Site visit.
Georgian, white-brick, mildly classical doorway, later stone projecting bay with door. Several drainpipes across façade.
E. Rose (NAU), 7 April 1976.
Since 1976 the façade has been whitewashed over, but the rear elevations are of red bricks with horizontal skintlings; there is a wing pointing north. A carriage arch gives access to a courtyard to the rear; against Waterloo Street is a former stable block with a central Dutch gable bearing the date 1870 with 'KC' and the remains of a wooden clock face. The north wall of this has blocked openings on two levels.
E. Rose (NLA), 10 March 2006.
See photographs (S1) of stable block, to be demolished 2006/7, in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 20 October 2006.
The building was converted to 39 apartments in 2006/7. Information from Borough Council.
The building was known as Cozens' Temperance Hotel and Hotel Mildenhall, and by 1986 had been renamed Park View Hotel. Information from (S2).
(S3) notes that in 1843 the Temperance Hall and Hotel were built to the east of the small access strip that had been left opposite St James' Road, on the line of the future Railway Road.
(S4) writing in 1845 records that the Temperance Hall and Hotel 'a large and commodious building' was built for the use of the Odd Fellows but was purchased a short time ago by a company of shareholders for the use of the Lynn Temperance Society, which is very numerous.
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 7 December 2018.
