Full Description
Odd ponds and channels on 1945 map (S6) resemble a moated site. However possibly are simply old pits with channels made in an attempt to drain them they have now been destroyed.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 4 June 1980.
January 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The possible moated site described above is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), as earthwork ditches and ponds, the majority of which are visible on the first edition ordnance survey map, centred on TG 1390 0097.
A possible continuation of the southern section of the moat is visible as an earthwork/grassmark on one set of aerial photographs (S4), and would suggest that the moat was originally sub-square in plan, and enclosed in its entirety an area of approximately 57m x 60m.
The ponds visible on the first edition map are also clearly apparent as earthworks on the aerial photographs, and two additional possible ponds or pit features are visible as cropmarks on the latest photography of the site (S4). These pits measure approximately 9m in diameter, and are similar in size to the two pond features to the south, visible on the first edition Ordnance Survey map (S5).
E. Bales (NMP), January 2010.
