Summary

Gargytt Hills is the site of a large group of Bronze Age barrows depicted on a map of 1585. All traces of these barrows had disappeared by at least 1909. Fieldwalking and metal detecting in the area between 1951 and 1995 recovered a variety of finds, including a Neolithic flint axehead and other Prehistoric worked flint, Roman coins, and medieval to post medieval metalwork. Systematic examination of the available aerial photographs for the area revealed several curvilinear features and a possible ring ditch to the south east (NHER 52095), which may or may not be related to the round barrows described above.

Map

Site of "Gargytt Hills"
A large barrow group comprised of 38 mounds is depicted on a map of "Free Mushold" compiled in 1585 for use of the Court of Exchequer in the action of Botyvaunt vs. Corbett (S10). The map is held by the Norfolk Record Office and has been reproduced in Kirkpatrick and Hudson's 1889 volume "The Streets and Lanes of the City of Norwich" (S9) and in a short note published in Norfolk Archoaelogy in 1907 (S10).
By 1909 it was noted that there were no trace of the earthworks when inspected by Rye (S10) and Roy Rainbird Clarke reports the same in 1933 (S2). W.G. Clarke's discussion of barrows published in 1913 (S11) noted an 1842 estate map depicting "Gargate Hills and Holes". The First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S8) does not depict these in any way but it does depict a plantation bordering on the southwest corner of the area which has retained the name of "Garglehill Plantation". This plantation still exists despite intensive development in the area.
Other 19th century texts which may make reference to this include S. Woodward's Historic and Antiquties of Norwich Castle (S7). When writing about a "British Village" near Ketts Castle on Gas Hill there is a reference to a number of barrows located to the south providing evidence for a dense population.
