Summary

This is the site of St Mary's Church, a medieval structure that was known as 'Swainsthorpe old church' by 1503, and was destroyed in the Reformation. The churchyard (NHER 9724) is located nearby.

Site of St Mary's Church.
Destroyed at Reformation. Owners of Swainsthorpe Hall claimed that foundations are visible in winter when undergrowth is low, but when visited at such a season nothing visible; slight platform in wood above river, but this probably natural - edge coincides with contour line.

Fragments of human bone found in woodland near site of St Mary's church 12 inches - 18 inches (30cm - 45cm) deep. Fragments identified by W. F. Milligan (NCM) as parts of skull, pelvis and femur.
