March 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Assessment of the aerial photographs (S2-S4) and historic maps for this site as part of the NMP mapping revealed that the previously recorded ‘enclosure’ or moat may in fact be the remnants of an agricultural land allotment.
In 1973 (S3) the site of the apparent enclosure or moat looks relatively convincingly, with a broad ditch and external bank, located within a series of fields. However this 'enclosure' matches up with field boundaries and hedges still extant in the 1940s (S2) and with those fields depicted on the OS 2nd edition (S5) and would therefore suggest that these features are unlikely to relate to anything other than late medieval to post medieval agricultural boundaries. The site appears to be under grass in 1946 (S2) with the former field boundaries visible as either earthworks or hedges. A number of tracks and small pits can be seen running along the boundaries. No sign of any major earthworks is visible at this date. By 1964 (S3) the field boundaries have been plough levelled and are now visible as soilmarks. Again thee only features visible would appear to relate to the former field boundaries and the tracks and pits from in 1946. This would suggest that the site does not relate to any substantial enclosure or moat, as previously suggested.
