Full Description
1709, with shaped gable (S1).
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU).
The Lodge is an L-shaped building with the shorter wing double pile. The date 1709 appears on the west gable of the northern pile, an exceptionally wide shaped gable covering a two pitch glazed pantile roof - or is the lower pitch a pentise added to an older building? There is a dormer in the upper pitch. This arrangement is only visible on the north, as on the south the later pile adjoins. The north pile has a panelled stack. The south pile, and the main north-south wing, seems to be of much later date. It may be that the original building was a small house, the main wing having removed its east end. Seen only from distance. Barn to north of red brick with horizontal skintlings, after 1770.
Had cart porch to north, with tall archway into barn. Lozenge ventilators in walls, and cart doors opposite porch. Roof has been replaced in the past, and a good part of the building has collapsed. Coach house and other buildings, not examined, seem to be contemporary with the barn which is under separate ownership from the Lodge. Possibly therefore an interesting little house of 1709 (and on older core??) extended and barns etc. built mid 19th century.
Compiled by E. Rose (NLA), 13 July 1995.
