Full Description
Moated site, apparently marked by Ordnance Survey as site of St Michael's Chapel.
R. R. Clarke (NCM) points out that the chapel was probably on the adjacent hill and this site is domestic.

Trenched by Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society.
Flint building material found.
Mrs Addington regards as site of Uphall and Boylands Manor (S1).
E. Rose (NAU), 21 February 1983.
December 1997. Earthwork Survey.
Survey at 1:1000.
Moat, probable leat, fish ponds and building platforms, with various drainage ditches.
Pottery identified by A. Rogerson (NLA):
Roman: one base and one body sherd greyware, one body sherd micaceous pale brown with grey exterior.
Late Saxon: one shelly, probably St Neots, body sherd.
Medieval: one base glazed, one ginger jar rim, early medieval unglazed. Four body sherds unglazed.
See report (S2) for plan and further details. This site is amongst those included in (S3) and the survey is also noted in (S4).
B. Cushion (NLA), 18 December 1997.
7 November 2007. Excellent condition. Under pasture, some thistles, old trees on edges of island. Highland cattle still present but only disturbance is a track along the outer lip of the west arm. The cattle clearly wallow in the channels. Island is free of disturbance. East arm, and channel leading sway to north, waterfilled. Owner did not take up option of management agreement due to proposed change of ownership.
