Summary

The discovery of Roman pottery, coins, roof tiles, painted wall plaster and a highly decorated and enamelled fragment of a Roman bowl, suggest that this is the site of a high status Roman building. This site is close to the Early Saxon cemetery NHER 1011.

May 1955. About 200m (650 feet) west of Town Farm.
Removal of topsoil in gravel pit revealed much Roman pottery 2nd to 3rd century, roof tiles and coin ?Antoninianus of Carausius, daub, copper alloy enamelled handle from copper bowl, see (S1), bone pin, sheep and horse bones. Painted wall plaster.
