Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch of an unknown date are seen on aerial photographs. A geophysical survey of this area in 2010 failed to identify any trace of this feature, although it is possible that geological conditions had masked archaeologically significant anomalies.

February 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm onshore electrical connection sub-station site.
The ring ditch was not detected during this survey but it is possible that geological conditions may have masked any magnetic anomalies of archaeological origin or deep ploughing might have significantly degraded the site.
See report (S1) and NHER 60615 for further details.

October 2023. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch (see above) of an unknown date are seen on aerial photographs (S2-S4). The feature appears to show as a cropmark bank rather than as a ditch on S2-S4. On the sources consulted by the project, the feature was only visible on aerial photographs from 1946 (S2-S4). The ring ditch was also not recorded during a previous geophysical survey ahead of the proposed Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm onshore electrical connection sub-station site (see above). It is therefore possible that the feature could be natural in origin, a product of modern agriculture or possibly relating to a former embanked post medieval extractive pit. However, an archaeological origin for the feature cannot be ruled out. The monument polygon has been updated to the location of the feature as seen on S2-S3.
