Full Description
October 1978. Visit.
Called Happisburgh Manor by Pevsner (S1), but this must have been a temporary change of name.
First major work of Detmar Blow and first four wing butterfly house. Dated 1900 with house name in clamp irons.
X-shaped with central room and west porch: thatched, of flint, brick and tile. Two summerhouses to north.
Now a country club.

According to newspaper report (S2), has early examples of fire-resistant structure; asbestos cement sheeting below thatch, concrete upper floor and concrete and stone staircase.

(S3) 1986 notes that clamp irons actually say AVE MARIA STELLA MARIS 'Forest of romantically placed stacks'.
Encircling wall and two stable blocks now garages also listed, plus an L-shaped thatched house called St Anne's (NHER 24941) also by Blow 1900.

The architect called the house Happisburgh Manor but the client called it St Mary's. The architect's name was restored in 1999.
