Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting at this location between 1998 and 2022 recovered prehistoric worked flints, including a number of Neolithic/Bronze Age flake tools; burnt flints; Iron Age, Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, Middle Saxon, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; an undated ceramic crucible fragment; Late Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; a post-medieval token and a range of other, Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman brooch and key handle; a possible Roman scalpel or knife handle; an Early Saxon brooch fragment; Late Saxon strap ends; medieval keys, a buckle, rowel spur, lead and silver seal matrices and lead weight; potentially medieval lead pot mends; a medieval/post-medieval buckle, sword or dagger pommel, purse fragment and copper alloy vessel fragments and post-medieval buckles, sword-belt fittings, crotal bells, a book clasp, drop handle and copper alloy ring. Cropmarks recorded in 1977 show this to be the site of an Iron Age/Roman farmstead, enclosure and field system (NHER 38744) and a medieval/post-medieval road (NHER 38743).
