Summary

In November 1988 a watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of a pipe trench. Although no features or finds were uncovered, the discovery of a Roman coin hoard was reported. Attempts made to confirm the discovery were unsuccessful.

Civil Parish DRAYTON, BROADLAND, NORFOLK

1 November 1988. Visit to Dauber Homes site, adjacent to Drayton Lodge.
Pipe trench dug mechanically - visited when trench in flood plain.
Chalk with flints exposed beneath thin mantle of sand/gravel. No features or finds.

6 and 15 November 1988. Visits.
Irregular section of pipe trench dug by JCB and bulldozer. About 6m wide from bottom of slope to top.
Dark soil on natural visible on both sides trench for whole distance. No features visible or finds.
JCB driver aware of what to look for and was adamant that there had been no disturbances.
No trace of Early Saxon cemetery suggested in area.

At around above date, information received that Roman coin hoard 'including denarii' was illegally found on the site, but efforts to confirm this led to no result.
