Summary

A Roman coin was found here in 1980. Fieldwalking in 2000 recovered a Neolithic (or possibly Mesolithic) flaked flint axe/adze; medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds and post-medieval brick and tile fragments. A fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey of part of this field in 2008 recovered a small number of additional items including prehistoric worked flints, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds and several post-medieval lead musket balls.

Found at western end of field in area marked as North Castle Field on 1807 estate map (S2) (Context 1):
1 Mesolithic or (more probably) Neolithic flaked flint axe/adze. See drawing (S3).

Found in area marked on 1807 estate map (S2) as Wash Pit Close (Context 2):
4 early post-medieval roof tile fragments and 2 brick fragments.
2 post medieval/late post medieval pantile fragments.

Found at eastern end of area marked as Brick Kiln Close on 1807 estate map (S2) (Context 3):
1 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd (frilled base 16th-century stoneware).
2 post-medieval pottery sherds (Glazed Red Earthenware, late 16th to 18th century).

March-April 2008. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey on proposed route of Sheringham Shoals Offshore Windfarm Grid Connection (Field 23).
Finds recovered included:
1 prehistoric flint borer and 2 flakes.
1 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherd.
1 post-medieval coin, 2 pottery sherds, 1 copper alloy button, 1 copper alloy decorative sheet fitting, 1 cast iron ?gutter/down pipe fragment and 3 lead musket balls.
1 modern bullet.
2 undatable lead unidentified objects.
