NHER 4019 (Building record) - St Nicholas' Church, West Lexham

Summary

The round flint tower of this church is Early Norman with a later brick parapet . It has three bell openings two of which have been cut out of single slabs of stone to most unusual designs. Long-and-short west quoins to nave. The nave roof was rebuilt in 1881. The south door way and y-traceried windows date to around 1300 . The chancel was rebuilt later in the Middle Ages. Roman, Late Saxon and medieval pot, prehistoric worked flint flakes and a 3rd century AD Roman coin have been found in the churchyard.

Round towered church mostly remodelled around 1300 then rebuilt again in 1881 and later, preserving tower and some original openings.
Medieval stone coffin lid.
