NHER 40055 (Building record) - 3 and 3a King's Staithe Square

December 1951. Listed Grade II.
Listing Description excerpt:
"Two houses under a continuous roof. Late 18th century with earlier core. Red brick and slate roof. Two storeys and dormer attic. No.3 is the larger, five-bay, north element. Panelled door to right under overlight with decorative glazing. Plain pilaster doorcase. To its left are three sashes with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches and one blind window. First floor lit through five sashes with similar details but with exposed boxes, suggesting c.1735, although the glazing is late 18th century. Moulded timber eaves cornice to both houses. Gabled roof with two gabled dormers over No. 3 and a third to No. 3A...No. 3A in three bays entered through a late 20th-century door to the right. Two plate-glass sashes to ground floor and three first floor windows similar to No.3. One stack visible to No. 3 to north, on rear roof slope."

December 2003. Field Observation.
Exterior briefly seen. Impression is of one overall façade with doorway in central projection, not mentioned on Listing. Certainly present and not mentioned is a blocked carriage arch with Classical mask keystone at south end of No. 3A. The large cellars (18th century or older) beneath Nos. 4-5 extend under this range as well, and the 16th century wall inside No. 4 might continue inside (see NHER 15117 for further information). The external paint of the façade was added for the making of the film 'Revolution' in the 1980s.
