In the 18th century the rectory at Besthorpe was recorded as having on the chimney piece:

'All you that sitt by thys fire warming
Pray for the sowle of Sir Iohn Downyng'

In other words a pre-Reformation date
The present old rectory (not listed) is a large late 19th century house of grey bnrick with ornate iron gates; the caretaker believes its stands on the original site.
