Full Description
January 1977. Listed, Grade II*.
Present hall of 1829 by Donthorne, in flint Gothick style.
Altered by Brandon in 1875.
This building replaced a hall, also by Donthorne, completed in 1827 but almost immediately burnt down, which in turn
replaced a building shown as 'rebuilt' on a map of 1747.
The earliest known building on the site is said to have been a Tudor hall with 'secret compartments' said to have been used in smuggling; this was variously known as Ufford's, Arnold's or Wyndham's Hall.
Asymmetrical plan and varied storeys.
Gothic windows, battlements, octagonal chimneys and bell tower.
See (S1), (S2) and (S3).
(S4) gives largely the same information except that map of 1747 is specified as (S5), and Brandon's alterations are given as 1876, for B. B. Cabel.
Part of the hall badly damaged by fire December 1984, see (S6).
E. Rose (NAU) 2 January 1985.
(S7) provides a history and description and includes a number of interior photographs. Copy added to the secondary file.
A. Yardy (HES), 25 August 2011.
