Map

November 1980. Field Observation.
Site of St Michael's church in churchyard of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (NHER 8885).
Large yew bush apparently marks site. 19th century graves must have cut into body of church.
Information from HER Record Card (S2).
E. Rose (NAU), 5 November 1980.

1984. Field Observation and Documentary Research.
A section of east-west wall measuring approximately 0.5m wide and 5m long was observed amongst the yew trees just within the north churchyard wall of Saint Peter and Saint Paul (NHER 8885). Only a few low courses of mortared flint were observed, but it may have formed part of the north wall of the church, and a slight mound at the west end suggests that further below-ground remains may exist.
Documentary research did not reveal the date St Michael's was regularly in use - this was noted as "probably 16th century". However, it was noted that Bryant (S4), following Blomefield (S3), suggested that St Michael's may have been the church serving the decayed village called Ryskes'. A guide to the parish church of SS Peter and Paul's (S7) notes that the livings of St Michael's church and the church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul were joined in 1347 and St Michael's may have been demolished around that time.
Information from monograph (S6).
E. Rose (NAU), 17 January 1985. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 29 September 2025.
