NHER 9872 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Possible post medieval wood banks and ditches

Visit to investigate banks and ditches running east to west and north to south in woods being developed as leisure area. They appear to be early wood boundaries (or perhaps of pre afforestation); woods are not marked on (S1).

Site visited for comparison with Foxley Wood banks (latter undated though wood ancient). Above identification seems correct; mostly small banks except for one large bank following track down east boundary of woods - this is probably a boundary bank or due to the wearing down of the hollow path.

One prominent bank running east to west observed, approximately 1m high maximum, adjacent line of old trees.

There are banks and ditches visible under the trees in the woodland to the south of Sheringham. These can be seen on a variety of aerial photographs, including RAF 1946 images (S2, S3 and S4), NLA 1986 images (S5), Cambridge University Committee for Aerial Photography 1955 photographs (S6), BKS 1959 (S7) and 1988 (S8) aerial photographs and Ordnance Survey 1969 aerial photographs (S9). It seems likely that these are boundary markers of possibly post medieval date. Some of these wood banks and ditches coincide with boundaries that are still in use today and are still marked on the Ordnance Survey base map (S10). An extent of area has been plotted for these features and within that some of the most prominent features have also been plotted. However, not all the features that can be determined here have been mapped. (The stretches of bank that have been plotted range in length from 25m to 350m.) Also there is a potential boundary bank on the eastern side of the wood that is recorded under NHER 38331, due to also being the line of a post medieval road.
Also it should be noted that the area of woodland in which no banks have been plotted contained fairly dense tree cover on all of the aerial photographs consulted. There will no doubt be further wood banks in this area as well. (The area where most features have been plotted was fairly clear, especially on the BKS 1959 aerial photographs (S7).)
