Summary

An excavation took place in this area in 1963 in order to examine the possibility of a Saxon line of defence on the site. Although no evidence was found to support this theory, some early medieval occupation evidence was revealed, as well as some Late Saxon to post medieval pottery sherds. Unfortunately later rubbish pits, gravel quarrying, and the construction of a row of cottages around 1850 resulted in heavy disturbance of the earlier contexts.

Map

1963. Excavation for the Norfolk Research Committee. [1], [2]. 159 Ber Street.
The aim was to test a theory of a line of Saxon defences along Ber Street. This theory now abandoned (1978).
The sequence of occupation is now (1978) difficult to establish. The sections do not survive and the pottery from the layers recorded in the site notebook evidence considerable post medieval intrusions that were not noticed on site.
Two trenches were cut; 4.6m x 1.5m and 3.7m x 1.5m (15ft x 5ft) and (12ft x 5ft). Trench B was excavated to natural. Down to 2.4m (8ft).

The earliest occupation may have been 12th century. However this is by no means certain. This is associated with the digging of a large gravel pit. There was large scale post medieval disturbance on the site, culminating in the construction of a row of cottages around 1850. There was no evidence for any Saxon defences. Found in cutting B, at least rubbish pits - probably both post medieval in date, but contained medieval and post medieval sherds (two trenches dug).
13th century cut into by 17th-18th century pits. Cutting A = Late Saxon -Post medieval sherds.
Cottages on site built around 1850.
Earliest finds Late Saxon /Early medieval. Earliest occupation cut by gravel pit. [3]
