Full Description
1973. Section dug across the pre-1964 line of King Street by the Norwich Survey. A trench 2m wide by 8m long was dug but as both the east and west ends were heavily disturbed by sewer pipes etc. The full sequence could only be recorded in the central area 1.80m long. There was a succession of six cobbled surfaces over a layer of gravel that lay directly on the natural chalk and contained 13th century pottery. There was no evidence for the suggested Roman road - nor for the known Late Saxon-12th century street. There was Late Saxon and early medieval pottery in the upper levels. [1]
