Full Description
1972. Excavation.
Norwich Survey excavation on the site of Bullards Anchor Brewery bottling plant yard.
There was slight evidence for scattered industrial and domestic use of the site in the 11th century, but the first general colonisation of the marsh began in the late 12th century or early 13th century with the building of a series of clay-walled structures.
The property boundaries established at this time survived into the 19th century.
The clay buildings were demolished in the mid-13th century. The site was then made-up with clay and silt on which stone-walled structures were built.
These included a series of furnaces for dyeing.
In the 16th century the buildings fell into decay, and the site was occupied by squatters.
Pottery from Late Saxon to post medieval and some 'Roman' tile.
Finds held by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1973.93 : A).
