Summary

In 1972 the car park of Watney Mann Social Club was subject to archaeological excavation. The aim of the excavation was to see if any Saxon occupation had survived modern disturbance intact. Several sherds of Late Saxon pottery (Thetford Ware) were found in the fills of later pits (medieval to post medieval). No trace of Saxon buildings survived.

1972. Excavation by A. Carter and [1] on the car park of Watney Mann Social Club, north of 33-35 St Benedict's Street and east of St Margaret's Street.
The aim of the excavation was to see if any Saxon occupation had survived modern disturbance intact.
Several sherds of Late Saxon pottery (Thetford Ware) were found in the fills of later pits (Medieval to post medieval). These had completely disected the natural gravel.
No trace of Saxon building survived.
